Brief:

Urban Catalyst.

An international workshop on Syggrou Street, Thessaloniki

27.08- 02.09

Structural changes and the economic crisis have radically affected the old commercial center of Thessaloniki in different ways.

The Axe of Syggrou is an example of a process of gradual abandonment: Where once business pulsated, now closed stores and workshops, vacant apartment houses, disused offices, some empty plots and old semi destroyed buildings are forming a silent, almost uncanny streetscape- still physically intact, but without action, noise and life.

We consider the state of vacancy and abandonment as an open ground for possibilities.

This “pending” urban situation, a vacuum, where former uses have ended and the future is still to come, bears in its condition of uncertainty, a huge creative potential.

The workshop will try to discuss and explore tools, tactics / strategies that can “activate” and initiate new urban situations: recycling and appropriation, repurpose, conversions, temporary use of existing structures, transforming / remodeling / rebuilding, minimal or radical spatial interventions …

The workshop program will include evening lectures/presentations by architects and young creative professionals from different fields .

Students from Architecture and Design or recent graduates who wish to participate in the workshop are very welcome. There are no fees for the workshop.
